The Bavarian Center for Applied Energy Research (ZAE Bayern) is a registered, non-profit association. The association was founded in December 1991 and has its registered office in Würzburg. The association was established to promote energy research as well as education, further training, consultation, information and documentation in all fields significant to energy research. The association supports a scientific research institute with divisions in Würzburg, Garching, Erlangen, Nuremberg and Hof, employing more than 200 scientists, technicians, administrative personnel and students. Since the founding of ZAE Bayern in 1991, ZAE has become a both nationally and internationally recognized research institute.

Institute Profile

ZAE Bayern works on the interface between evidence-based fundamental and applied industrial research. Every year the institute performs a great number of projects with the industry, from SME to large groups, as well as with university and non-university research partners. Since the foundation, ZAE has strengthened its competences consistently. Today it offers a wide spectrum of research, development and consulting services, metrological services and seminars in the areas of energy efficiency, energy storage and renewable energies. The core competences of ZAE are energy efficiency, energy storage and renewable energies. In these areas ZAE deals, amongst other things, with thermal and electrochemical energy storage, energy optimised buildings and urban quarters, energy efficient processes, photovoltaics, solar thermal and geothermal systems, metrology, nano materials, smart grids and energy systems. Competence in materials science, theoretical understanding, and development of components and finally optimisation of the same within energy systems creates a continuous, knowledge- based chain of value. Our integrative approach to these individual focuses facilitates the task of finding effective solutions to increase energy efficiency and boost the use of renewable energy sources. Projects realised at the institute take advantage of interdivisional cooperation and benefit from the competences within the close network of research groups within each division. Education is a further pillar of ZAE Bayern’s activities; around 20 graduands, master- and bachelor students, as well as trainees completed their degree-, master- and bachelor thesis, or project work in 2014.


ZAE Bayern promotes the practical application of scientific findings, constantly endeavoring to form cooperative partnerships with scientific and industrial organisations. Joint projects realised by the institute’s divisions together with industrial partners profit from close networking and the resulting synergies. Thanks to success in raising third-party funds, ZAE Bayern is not only able to strengthen its activities of energy research, but is also experiencing growth in human resources and investments in technical equipment, in order to become nationally and internationally competitive. ZAE Bayern has special close ties with the Technical University of Munich (TUM), the University of Würzburg (Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg) and the University of Erlangen (Friedrich-Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg) (FAU). ZAE Bayern is a member of the Renewable Energy Research Association (FVEE - ForschungsVerbund Erneuerbare Energien), a strategic partnership between non-university German research institutes working in the field of renewable energy. ZAE Bayern is a founding member of the Energy Campus Nuremberg (EnCN). EnCN is a research cooperation between the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, the TH Nürnberg and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der angewandten Forschung e.V. (Society for the Promotion of Applied Research) and ZAE Bayern’s division in Nuremberg in the field of energy research. Furthermore, ZAE is a partner in the network Renewable Energies of the research initiative “TUM.Energy”.
