Systems Engineering - SYS -

The Systems Engineering group works at the interface between research and industry and deals with functional, energy-efficient, and sustainable energy solutions for buildings, neighbourhoods, municipalities, and the industry on a systemic level. Their work covers the conduct of feasibility studies and conceptual design, scientific support in planning and construction, as well as operational optimisation and evaluation.

The main work focuses are:

  • Innovative and renewable energy and utility concepts for municipalities and industries
  • Energy-efficient, sustainable district solutions
  • Innovative buildings (construction and renovation)
  • Monitoring of plants and buildings (analysis, operational optimisation, success monitoring)

Scientific and Technical Support for the Bavarian State Government's 10,000 Houses Programme

The 10,000 Houses Programme is intended to support building owners during construction and refurbishment in taking into account future energetic requirements and in meeting the remaining energy demand in an environmentally responsible manner while supporting the energy system. ZAE Bayern has been commissioned to technically and scientifically support the conceptualisation and implementation of the funding programme. Project work is carried out in close cooperation with the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs. ZAE's tasks include technical support in the development of new, sensible funding modules as well as, in the amendment of present funding regulations, the ongoing management of the programme, but also the evaluation of funding eligibility for new and so far hardly applied technologies in the fields of heating systems, storage technologies, or renewable energies. This particularly concerns questions on innovative technologies still in development.

Scientific Support for Municipal Heat Supplies Using Deep Geothermal Energy

ZAE Bayern has been entrusted with the scientific and technical support of various projects in municipal district heating via deep geothermal energy. Tasks range from feasibility studies and conceptualisation during the planning phase to the evaluation of ongoing plant operation, proposals for optimisation, as well as the implementation of concrete optimisation measures and evaluation of their success. The spectrum ranges from the analysis and evaluation of components to overall projects and systems aiming to implement an efficient ecological and economic overall concept. This includes support in medium- to long-term project planning or the technical comparison of variants for a future expansion of energy centres or district heating networks. The tools employed include application-specific calculation software.

ReWaMem - Recycling of Laundry Sewage for Reuse via Ceramic Nanofiltration

Project ReWaMem is a collaboration with project partners such as Kompetenznetzwerk Wasser und Energie (coordination) and Fraunhofer IKTS. The objective of the BMBF-funded project (funding code 02WV1568F) is to reduce the fresh water demand of laundries through the targeted treatment and reuse of sewage. The project is exemplarily implemented in a laundry near Coburg. The treatment problem is to be solved by ceramic membrane carriers and membranes in multi-channel pipe geometries to be developed or, as an alternative development, with rotating disk filters, each with a nanofiltration coating. Based on the starting points found for saving energy and water, ZAE Bayern is further developing a tool that will allow textile laundries to take a more specific look at their process chains to be able to identify the potential for sewage reuse within their company. Within ZAE's work package, benchmarks for laundering processes, particularly regarding energy and resource requirements, are to be developed and made available as a web-based tool.
