ZAE Bayern is a nationally and internationally recognised non-university research institute. Our work is aimed at achieving a CO2 -neutral energy supply by means of renewable energies and energy efficiency technologies, thereby contributing to climate protection. We have been working towards this goal since 1991 with institutional funding from the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy.
In our main fields of expertise – renewable energies, energy storage, and energy efficiency – we pursue an interdisciplinary approach at the interface between basic and applied industrial research, ranging from materials research and component development to system optimisation.
We cover topics such as :
Our researchers are located at two main divisions in Garching and Würzburg as well as two branch offices in Hof and Nuremberg. To ensure the best possible use of all available competencies, work is carried out across these locations.
We bring state-of-the-art science into practical application through research, education and training, consulting and information, as well as planning and quality assurance. To this end, we cooperate with companies ranging from SMEs to corporations, with university and non-university scientific institutions, accompanying research approaches along the entire way of their development. Our partners benefit not only from our thematic expertise and practical research experience, but also from our routine in dealing with funding programmes to finance large projects. Thanks to the resulting synergies, our work not only advances the energy transition in general, but also Bavaria as an industrial location in particular.
We work particularly closely with the Chair of Energy Systems at the Technical University of Munich and the Chair of Experimental Physics at the Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg. Furthermore, ZAE Bayern is a member of several scientific associations and communities:
ZAE Bayern publishes hundreds of articles every year, including refereed publications, books, manuscripts, conference papers and other publications. A detailed list can be found in the annual activity reports.Annual Reports
We conduct applied research at the interface between basic science and industrial application. Our methods and systems aim to achieve CO2 neutrality and thereby counteract climate change through the intelligent and efficient use of renewable energies.
